Preventative Care

Georgia has a high population of mosquitos due to our warm, moist weather.  It is important to protect your dog against heartworm disease.  Heartworms is a disease transmitted when infected mosquitos bite the dog.  This disease can be fatal, but it is also treatable and preventable.  Heartworm treatment is expensive.  Your vet can prescribe a monthly pill that will not only prevent heartworms, but also other parasites, such as whipworms, hookworms, roundworms, and tapeworms.  Vets often recommend that dogs in Georgia remain on heartworm prevention year-round.

Fleas cause much discomfort and transmit roundworms and tapeworms, parasites that can devastate the health of your dog or cat.  Several flea preventative ointments are available from your vet and from your pet supply store (and of course on-line).
